Douglas Dwight Fleming, 66, of Arab died February 5, 2012 at his
home after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Fleming was born on March 17, 1945, in Arab to the late
Bethel and Argel (Morrow) Fleming. He was a lifelong resident of
the Arab area. He was married to Doris (Smith) Fleming for 47 ½
years. He was known by family and many friends as Harold or Pee
Wee. He honorably served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1968 and was a
Vietnam Veteran serving with the 359th
Transportation Company in the Central Highlands. He retired
from a 29-year career at PPG Industries, Inc. and then enjoyed
interacting with acquaintances and friends as service writer at
Clayton Chevrolet in Arab. In 2006 he was elected as Commissioner
of Marshall County District 1. He was appointed and honored to
serve as Chairman of the Marshall County Commission from 2007 to
2010. He was a member of the Arab First Baptist Church, where he
actively served as an ordained deacon. He participated in many
church activities and civic functions including Cancer Relay for
Life and United Way.
He is survived by his wife Doris Fleming, daughter Christina
Ridgeway of Arab, and daughter and son-in-law Zandra and Joe
McDonald of Dora, AL; four grandchildren: Logan Ridgeway, Jared
Ridgeway, Jacob McDonald and Anna McDonald; sister Nancy Wilks;
brother and sister-in-law Jimmy and Jeanene Fleming and a host of
nieces, nephews, cousins and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bethel and Argel
Fleming, and brother Douglas (Shorty) Fleming.
The funeral was at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday February 08,
2012, at Arab First Baptist Church, with Dr. Paul Murphy
officiating. Burial was in Arab Memorial Cemetery, with
Gober Funeral Chapel directing. Visitation was at the Church from
6-8 PM on Tues. and He lay in state at the Church on Wed. from
10 AM until Funeral Time.
Pallbearers : Nickolas Fleming, Butch Higgins, Phillip
Posey, Larry Wright, Vince Jozwiak, and Bobby Morrow. Honorary
pallbearers were the deacons of Arab First Baptist Church.
