Lucille Walker Gibbs, 99, of Guntersville Rd. , Arab went home
to be with her Lord and
Savior February 21, 2012. Lucille and her twin brother were
born September 10, 1912, the 7th and
8th
children of the dozen born to Robert Emmett and Sophia Click
Walker in Marshall
County, Alabama.
She was a faithful member of Gilliam Springs Baptist Church for
more than 78 years where
she served in many capacities including teaching Sunday School for
more than 60
years.
Mrs. Gibbs 35 year school teaching career began in a two-room
school and ended at Arab
City Elementary School as a fifth grade teacher. She
graduated from New Hope High School as
Valedictorian, completed a bachelor's degree from Jacksonville
State Teachers
College, and Master's Degree in Education from Peabody College.
Learning was a
life-long passion and she continued to educate herself through
reading and
studying as long as she was able.

Retired Teachers Association,
AARP, and Kappa Kappa IOTA National Teachers Sorority in which she
served two
terms as President of the Alabama Chapter and represented Alabama
at the

several capacities in Arab's Historical Society and related to her
family many
first-hand accounts of the developments of our city and
area. And for many years she and her friends
enjoyed doing projects in the Daffodil Garden Club.
A quote from the book, The Descendants of John
Walker, by her Sister Frankie Roberts
states: "It was at Concord Baptist Church that Lucille met the
dashing handsome
young teacher, Kermit Gibbs, who had come to teach at
Concord. Needless to say, he swept her off her feet,
winning her hand in marriage, and took her to his home on Brindley
Mountain
near Arab where they have lived ever since."
She is survived by two Sons and their Wives, Kay and Lurlene
Gibbs and Kent and Judy
Gibbs of Arab; Daughter in law: Martha Gibbs Baumann; Three

Grandchildren and

She was preceded in death by Husband: J. Kermit Gibbs, Her

Of her many "hats", the one she would want to be remembered by,
is that of a Godly
woman-and she will be.
